A native of Wayne County, Alfonzo King grew up in the Mount Olive area and graduated from Carver High School in 1952 where he was selected “Best All Around Student” in his class. He graduated from North Carolina A & T State University in May 1956 with a B. S. Degree in Business Administration and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Mayor King holds a Master’s Degree in Business Management from Central Michigan University.

While attending A & T University, he was active in campus activities. He was elected Editor-In-Chief of the school yearbook his senior year, voted as one of the Outstanding Seniors in his graduating class, and selected to “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” in 1956.

Mayor King entered the Air Force in October 1956 and retired in 1976. While in the Air Force, he held both staff and command positions, was twice selected as one of the Outstanding Supply Services Officers in the Air Force, and was selected the Outstanding Senior Services Manager in the Air Training Command in 1974 and 1975. He served a year in Viet Nam as Commander of the 35th Services Squadron. Decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Bronze Star.

Mayor King served as Director of Personnel and Safety for the City of Goldsboro from February 1979 until his retirement in April 2000. During his tenure with the City, he was a member of the North Carolina Chapter of the International Personnel Management Association, served as President of the Wayne County Personnel Association and the North Carolina Organization of Municipal Personnel Officers, was a member of the North Carolina League of Municipalities Board of Trustees for eleven years, and also a member of the North Carolina League of Municipalities Board of Directors for two years. Mayor King received formal training through the North Carolina Institute of Government in the fields of Personnel, Purchasing, and Municipal Administration.

In January 2002, Mr. King was appointed by the Goldsboro City Council to serve as Mayor for the remainder of the term of Hal Plonk who passed away in December 2001. In November 2003, Mayor Alfonzo King was elected to his first full four-year term as Mayor of the City of Goldsboro. He won a second term in November 2007 and in July 2012 was elected for a third term.

Mayor King serves as Chairman of the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) Risk Management Services Board of Trustees. He is also Second Vice President of the Board of the NCLM and member of the North Carolina Metropolitan Mayors Coalition. He has previously served on the North Carolina Governor’s Military Advisory Council as Chairman, the Wayne Community College Board of Trustees, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation Board of Directors, United Way of Wayne County Board of Directors, and the North Carolina League of Municipalities Future Directions Steering Committee. Mayor King was the 2010 Recipient of the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation Lifetime Achievement Award. In February 2011, Mayor King was honored with the prestigious North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Beverly Perdue.

Mayor King is married to the former Juanita Brock of Mount Olive. They have two children and three grandchildren.
