Training & Safety in part is charged with the responsibility of providing all initial recruit tranining and certification, along with Fire, Rescue and EMS continuing education training and re-certification, specialty training such as collapse/trench rescue training, Confined Space, Haz-Mat, Technical Rescue, Emergency Medical Technician/Medical Responder requirements.

Training includes hands-on, classroom-based, in-station company based training, etc., but training never stops. The Goldsboro Fire Department has many certified fire instructors that assist in the many different disciplines of training that our personnel are required to have annually.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To apply for the position of firefighters, you must:

Be at least 18 years of age
Have a high school diploma or GED
Have a valid driver's license and good driving record
Have a current North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) Certification or equivalent
Obtain a Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) by taking the following WorkKeys assessments: Applied Math, Locating Information and Reading for Information
Have no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude
Have no illegal drug use within the last 12 months
Meet the medical requirements set forth in OSHA 1910.156, 1910.134 and 1910.120.

HIRING PROCESS

City Application:
Persons must complete and employment application once a firefighter position is advertised. The application is available online to be downloaded, printed for completion and submitted to Human Resources in person or via mail prior to application closing date.
Candidate Physical Agility Test:
Applicants will be scheduled to attend the orientation to CPAT. Orientation is highly recommended but is not mandatory. All applicants that chose not to attend Orientation will be required to sign a waiver.
Criminal History and Driving Record:
Applicants will bring a copy of their criminal history and driving records of the last seven years consistent of their residency on a specified date. These documents must be authentic in nature, from a reputable and official source
Candidate Interview:
Applicants who successfully complete the CPAT are then considered candidates and are scheduled for a structured interview before a panel.
Background/Reference Check:
Candidates who are selected for further consideration will have a background check conducted by the City.
Conditional Offer to Employment:
As the department needs to fill vacancies, candidates are scheduled for a conditional offer of employment, which outlines what is expected of the candidate during the first year of employment
Drug Test Screening:
Within 24 hours of the conditional offer of employment, a drug screening test must be conducted and provide negative results.
Medical Screening:
Candidates Meet the medical requirements set forth in OSHA 1910.156, 1910.134 and 1910 120.
