Q: When I call for an ambulance, why does a fire truck come?
A
: On some EMS (Emergency Medical Service) calls we respond to assist EMS with medical care. Our firefighters have medical training and in some cases we can arrive on scene prior to EMS.
Q: During the fire, why does the Fire Department cut holes in the roof and knock out windows?
A
: This is done to help ventilate the house of superheated fire gases and smoke. By doing this we can increase the chances of survival for any victims that may be in the structure. Also, this helps the firemen to reach the fire more quickly and safely, which in turn should cut down on damage.
Q: When I call and cancel a fire alarm, why does the Fire Department still respond?
A: Even though the alarm has been cancelled, we still respond so that we can verify that the alarm is false or the incident is a non-emergency situation. We do this for the following reasons:
It is our policy, which in turn helps us on our insurance rating process.
The fire may have been started intentionally and by canceling the fire alarm, it can help the fire spread even more quickly.
