A comprehensive program of fire code compliance is managed by using the International Fire Code, which has been adopted as the 2009 North Carolina Fire Code. Code enforcement efforts in 2010 will be conducted by the Fire Inspector and by way of a Company Inspection Program with the use of staffed fire crews from the operational section of the fire department

Order to Comply
Fire Code Inspections
are required for all places of business. Periodic inspections will be conducted based on your type of business. An examples below illustrate the minimum frequency rate of inspections.
1 Year Inspections

Assembly - Restaurants, clubs and places of entertainment
Hazardous - Hazardous materials, flammable liquids facilities
Institutional - Hospital, nursing homes, licensed care facilities, jails
High-Rise Buildings and Residential except one and two family dwellings
2 Year Inspections

Industrial Facilities
Educational Facilities - except public schools
3 Year Inspections

Businesses
Mercantile, Storage Facilities

Plans review and new construction inspections are conducted in close cooperation with the City of Goldsboro Building Inspections Department. To schedule inspections of new construction and fire protection systems

*A complete set of civil and architectural plans, specifications and calculations are required for review. Plans may be submitted with the building inspections department submittal package.
Plans and inspections related to fire protection include:
Site Plan - fire lanes, fire hydrants, standpipes, fire department connection "FDC," and fire alarm/sprinkler systems with appropriate calculations.
All plans are submitted and then permits will be granted once approval of said plans meet fire protection guidelines.
Automatic fire extinguishing systems or fire sprinklers including fire pumps and standpipes.
Fire alarm systems
Occupancy classification for the use of storage or hazardous materials.
Installation or removal of tanks for liquid motor fuels and LPG, LNG, CNG
High-piled combustible storage occupancies
Kitchen hood fire protection systems
Paint spray booths and associated systems
Special agent protection systems
Compressed gas or medical gas systems
Code Enforcement Goals
To raise the public's awareness of fire safety considerations
To identify fire hazards that must be eliminated for a safer environment
To develop records and reports of inspection informatino that will serve in public record
To verify proper functions and maintenance of installed fire protection systems and other building fire protection equipment and features.
Common Fire Safety Inspection Points
A fire inspection should include checking for the following:
The means of egress as pertaining to life safety considerations
Fire protection systems - fire alarms that give early warning to occupants and fire suppression systems that control fire in the early stages
Heating systems as they affect teh furnace, the fuel-supply and ignition systems, bents and cimney
Electrical systems - including electrical distribution, motors, extension cords, lamps, lighting fixtures, grounding and other related areas.
Mechanical systems - sucha as heatign and air conditioning systems
Storage - where materials are being stored and how they are arranged in occupancies. Recycling programs have had an impact on buildings not designed to house these used products until they are scheduled for pickup.
